Maytag Blue Cheese Page

History:

The cheese was originally created by Frederick Louis Maytag II and Robert Maytag under the Maytag appliance company. The cheese is still today produced by a farm originally owned by them. The cheese continued to be one of the most popular cheeses in the US, even winning best Hard Blue Cheese at the 2005 World Cheese Awards. Until 2017 when listeria was found in the cheese. But this problem was fixed and production resumed in late 2018.

How's it made?:

Pasteurized skim milk from Holstein Cattle is used for the cheese. After mold spores are added, curds are cut into small cubes. after that they are stirred hile being gently heated. After this, they are drained. Then they are put into round molds with openings for mold to activate. They are then aged in cool, humid caves for 6 months.
